Baloola House of the Embalmed Immortals
         Ssenkerettanyi Wofissizakadde

The art and science of embalming and preserving human bodies is one of the most ancient sciences in the recorded history of humankind. The practice of embalming dead bodies appears to have begun with the bodies of ancient God-Kings, High Initiates of the esoteric and spiritual societies. In the lost civilizations of the Kagera-Basin of east-central Africa, embalming and preservation of dead human bodies continued until modern times, especially in the Bunyoro-Kitara and Buganda kingdoms. The Kasubi Tombs is where four bodies of Uganda’s kings have been embalmed and consecrated in a large traditional round hut made of reeds and grass, which testifies, to this ancient practice. In ancient Misiri (Egypt), bodies of the Pharaohs were always embalmed and mummified. Even the bodies of their pets (dogs and cats) were embalmed and preserved.

In 1982, the Born-Saint, Founder, and Lineage Holder of the Sserulanda NYS Foundation directed the first embalming of an Initiate's body; a feat that was successfully carried out using the traditional lost methods of heat or fire. Later the Foundation embarked upon the use of contemporary embalming methods using chemicals such as formaldehyde, which is the major embalming agent used in developed countries.

This work explains the reasons embalming is practiced at the remote Spiritual Fraternity of Sserulanda Nsulo Yobulamu, in Rakai District of Uganda. Because of the use of this ancient practice, , some have circulated unfounded rumors that the Fraternity does not bury their dead. The fact is, they embalm and preserve the bodies of only a few prominent Initiates or those whose selfless service to others is deemed outstandingly historical. The Fraternity has three cemeteries where the dead are buried in traditional and modern ways within concrete graves.
